Welcome to The Friends of Waterford Park!!!

Spring 2010

In early April, in cooperation with the MD Dept. of Natural Resources and with funding in part by a grant from the MD Urban and Community Forest Committee, more than 300 seedlings were planted along the paved path and in the woods in Waterford Park and along the stream in Rock Creek Parks. Species planted were: red maple, sycamore, chokeberry, red ozier dogwood, serviceberry, hawthorne and cranberry viburnum. Flags will remain at the planting sites until we can assess survival rates and mulch the plants that are flourishing. We also had help from a junior Girl Scout troop and from FWP volunteers.

In late April, Boy Scouts from Troop 799 cleared the previously-sprayed invasives from along Carroll Creek. This was in preparation for the May 22 planting of 80 trees in that area. These efforts are a part of scout Tyler Lowe's Eagle Scout project. The trees are funded by the MUCFC grant. Girl Scouts cleaned the parks as part of the Big Sweep April 24. A job well done! The 2010 winter newsletter was the only one after the spring 2009 that you already have.

We work every week for a few hours, often on Sunday afternoons and other times as our regular members have the opportunity. Please email Ginny at info@friendsofwaterfordpark.org to ask about upcoming sessions. We welcome new volunteers - no special skills required.
